Sony unveiled on Monday, October 15 that it’s working on a blockchain-oriented solution for its digital rights management system. Although the Japanese conglomerate is still considering the commercialization of the project, it has described it as an ideal means to “record verifiable information in a difficult to falsify way.” The project is a joint undertaking between Sony Global Education and Sony Music Entertainment Japan and will target the management of rights-related information of written works.

The revelation comes one year after the technology giant joined with IBM to develop its original blockchain-based educational product. Sony notes in its press release that the system is built on the authenticating, sharing, and rights management of educational data previously run by Sony and Sony Global Education. The company also noted that technological advancements have enabled a system where anyone can share and broadcast content, adding:

“But the rights management of that content is still carried out conventionally by industry organizations or the creators themselves, necessitating a more efficient way of managing and demonstrating ownership of copyright-related information for written works.”

According to Sony, its blockchain solution will handle rights management of different forms of digital content, ranging from educational content and textbooks to films, music, e-books, and VR. Although the exact nature of Sony’s blockchain solution is not apparent yet, the technology multinational has very high interest in the blockchain technology. Sony received two blockchain-based patents from the United States Patent and Trademarks Office in August this year.

The quest to leverage blockchain for rights management solution puts the company as a technology innovations pioneer and champions blockchain as the ideal technology for the digital future. The ability of blockchain to be used for enhancing business processes, safekeeping and managing health data, and ensuring security in almost every sector is being manifested already.
